IPO JOINS WORLD REFUGEE DAY COMMEMORATION IN TIRANA

“Refugees are not just numbers – they are people with dreams, pain, and dignity. They do not choose to leave – they are forced.”

Every year on June 20, World Refugee Day reminds us of our collective duty to safeguard the right to life, dignity, and safety for all those forced to flee conflict, persecution, or violence.

On this meaningful occasion, the International Police Organization (IPO), represented by its Executive President Dr. Mareglen Tomori, had the honor of participating in a high-level commemorative event held at Europe House in Tirana. The event was co-organized by the Ministry of Interior of Albania, the European Union Delegation in Albania, UNHCR, and a wide range of national and international partners.

The event was skillfully moderated by Ms. Alma Bime, Director for Migration, Asylum, and Anti-Trafficking Policies at the Ministry of Interior — adding both institutional depth and human insight to the proceedings.

IPO’s participation reflects its enduring commitment to human rights, inclusion, and international cooperation. As an organization dedicated to public safety and justice, IPO stands in solidarity with the displaced — advocating for their protection, recognition, and the development of inclusive policies that uphold human dignity.

The event featured speeches by:

• Ms. Alma Bime, Director for Migration, Asylum, and Anti-Trafficking Policies, Ministry of Interior

• Mr. Andi Mahila, Deputy Minister of Interior

• H.E. Silvio Gonzato, EU Ambassador to Albania

• Mr. Michele Ribotta, Acting UN Resident Coordinator in Albania

• Mr. Toshitsuki Kawauchi, UNHCR Representative in Albania

• Ass. Prof. Iris Luarasi, Director of the Counselling Line for Women and Girls

The event featured moving musical performances by refugee and Albanian children, sending powerful messages of unity and hope. A special highlight was the unveiling of the “Together We Grow” art exhibition, created by refugee and local children, envisioning a world built on inclusion and shared futures.

Under the leadership of Dr. Mareglen Tomori, IPO extends its heartfelt thanks to all partners, organizers, speakers, and attendees — for turning empathy into action and standing together in support of refugees across Albania and beyond.

On this #WorldRefugeeDay, we renew our collective commitment to:

• Building bridges of understanding

• Strengthening international protection systems

• Promoting a world rooted in dignity, justice, and peaceful coexistence

Today, we are the voice of those who are not heard.
